The Transnet Freight Rail Class 44 is a South African diesel locomotive with electric power transmission , which will be delivered from 2015. The Transnet Freight Rail series will comprise 233 locomotives and comes from the Evolution Series from General Electric , where it is designated ES40ACi .
Manufacturer
The first six locomotives were built from April to July 2015 at General Electric's Erie plant in the US state of Pennsylvania . The remaining 227 locomotives will be built in the South African Transnet Engineering plant in Koedoespoort near Pretoria , where the first locomotive was almost ready in October 2015. In the same month, two of the imported locomotives carried out test drives on the Pyramid South – Bela-Bela route .
The procurement of the 44 series is part of the largest ever awarded supply contract for locomotives in South African history, which is also the largest single investment ever made by a South African company. The contract consists of four individual contracts with globally active rail vehicle manufacturers for the construction of a total of 1,064 locomotives. They are:
- CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Company for 359 dual-system - electric locomotives of the TFR class 22E
- Bombardier Transportation for 240 two-system electric locomotives of the TFR class 23E .
- GE Transportation for 233 TFR class 44 diesel-electric locomotives.
- China CNR Corporation for 232 TFR Class 45 diesel-electric locomotives .
technology
The 44 series was developed by GE Rail , a division of General Electric , according to the specifications of Transnet Freight Rail. In contrast, the predecessor series TFR class 43 was the standard variant C30ACi developed by GE for Kapspur applications , which was bought “off the peg”.
The main components of the 44 series, such as the GEVO-12 diesel engine, are manufactured in the USA; only the final assembly takes place in Koedoespoort. This division of the work fulfills the contractual requirement for at least 55% local production for diesel locomotives.
Factory numbers
The factory numbers of the class 44 locomotives built by GE are listed in the table below:

All class 44 locomotives were delivered in red TFR paint. It was not possible to determine why the chains of the lifting protection on the bogies are pink.
