TOMAK

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TOMAK (* 1970 in St. Veit an der Gölsen , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian artist who lives and works in Vienna .

life and work

TOMAK first attended the natural science branch of the Bundesrealgymnasium in St. Pölten and began studying painting and graphics in 1995 with Christian Ludwig Attersee at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. The natural sciences shape TOMAK's work to this day, as his large-format paintings mainly show technical, scientific representations such as machines, construction plans or anatomical teaching boards. His works are in several layers of screen printing and oil paintingbuilt up. He sees himself as an antist (an anti-artist), the “posterboy of anti-art” and opposes political correctness, the uniform, “varnished” as he calls it. The name becomes a brand that provokes, polarizes and, above all, is one thing: against.

reception

TOMAK on Salzburg Emilie Breyer - "The God-Willed Metamorphosis", p. 9

"Concentrated provocation, rebellion and fragments, seemingly confused disputes with the intellectual elite of the 19th century, rattle at you in its filigree and striking motifs as well as meticulously collected elements and reflections of contemporary pop culture."

1. Introspective Toni Stooss (former director of the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg ), p. 36

“He appears as a garishly made-up clown or as a dandy with Ray-Ban glasses - timeless black sunglasses that hide the machine eyes of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Terminator' and how they protect the eyes of 'Neo' and his colleagues in the US -american science fiction film Matrix. With his glasses that veil the view but reflect the environment in the two glasses differently, he sits between 'Terminator' and 'Neo', as it were. Between the cyborg coming from the future, with the 'license to kill', and the 'neo' who will save humanity in the future from the machine beings of the matrix. 'Art - God - Ray - Ban - Asshole' is the sarcastic chain of connections that TOMAK's exaggerated ego creates. "

1. Introspective Heike Curtze (Heike Curtze Gallery) - “TOMAK goes to war”, p. 72

“The art-producing machine TOMAK undertakes a perfect ride through the universe, its universe. Weapons are always there on this trip, handguns drawn. They are not used. TOMAK's most powerful weapon is art. "

Malpractice Roman Grabner (Head of Bruseum, Universalmuseum Joanneum Graz) - "Malpractice", p. 237

“TOMAK's art is an art that operates with multiple senses, an art of counter-perception that is based on the timeless without denying the contemporary, an art that strives for parallels and at the same time creates a polyfocal network of uncertainties. His art does not leave us in peace, because a lot remains hidden from us at first glance and requires detailed observation, but what we are able to recognize gets under our skin in the truest sense of the word. "

Malpractice Elsy Lahner (curator Albertina ) - "Posterboy of Anti-Art", p. 249

“He is the opposite of the good citizen, a disruptor who communicates without being asked and expresses his anger. An aggressive monster who expresses his discomfort in the culture, one who cannot be quieted down. "
