Tabellaria is a genus of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) with around 10 species that occur in fresh and marine water.

features

Tabellaria forms unbranched threads from tabular cells that are only connected at the corners by small gelatinous cushions. The colonies form a zigzag band or are star-shaped. The individual cells have the typical diatom shell consisting of two counters. The shell is rectangular when viewed from the side and rod-shaped when viewed from the shell, with the middle and ends being thickened. The cells have a central nucleus and several disc-shaped plastids that are colored golden brown by fucoxanthin . The size of the cells is 6 to 130 micrometers.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the typical division of diatoms into two parts, which leads to the reduction of the cells. The colonies can then break apart. Sexual reproduction is unknown for the genus. The formation of permanent cells from vegetative cells is known.

Occurrence

Tabellaria occurs in stagnant waters in sediment, on aquatic plants and in plankton . In summer and autumn, the genus can represent the dominant plankton form. The individual species prefer nutrient-rich, warm or nutrient-poor, cool locations.
