Tabor Church Freudenstadt

The Taborkirche in Freudenstadt ( Northern Black Forest ) is a church building of the Roman Catholic parish Freudenstadt in the diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart . The church is actually called “ Christ's Transfiguration ”, but the name Taborkirche has gained acceptance in public because, according to the testimony of the Gospels, the “ Transfiguration of Christ ” took place on Mount Tabor .

history

The Taborkirche was a replacement for the small Peter and Paul Church, which had served the small Catholic parish of Freudenstadt, founded in 1859, and the spa guests as a place of worship, but had long since become too small. The decision to build a new church was made in 1928. The architect Otto Linder was commissioned with the planning . The building was erected in 1930/1931 and the church was consecrated on August 16, 1931. Four bells were purchased three years after the consecration, but were withdrawn for war purposes as early as 1942. The Tabor Church survived the Freudenstadt firestorm at the end of the Second World War unscathed and was therefore temporarily available to Protestant Christians, whose town church had largely been destroyed, after the end of the war.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the church was thoroughly renovated and adapted to the more recent liturgical developments after the Second Vatican Council (for example, the altar was moved closer to the nave and the area of the faithful). Unfortunately, this also disregarded some of the architect's planning ideas, for example by adding a ceiling, which changed the effect of the room. Another renovation in 2016 was able to reverse some of the interventions of the 1970s, and the church was also technically upgraded (electrics, heating, ventilation). A new altar was consecrated by the Rottenburg bishop Gebhard Fürst .

1994 Tabor church received a new organ workshop Rieger organ building from Schwarzach in Vorarlberg . The instrument has 42 registers on three manuals and a pedal .

description

The simple basilica-shaped building, facing northeast, is covered with a hipped roof. Only the almost square tower, which is cut into the structure in the front part of the church, shows with its flat roof and sound openings arranged across the corners in the upper area that this is a so-called “ New Building ” structure. The main entrance under a vestibule is located at the rear on the long side of the church facing the street. The gallery is on the back wall of the church. The nave is aligned with the retracted choir. The narrow side aisles are separated from the central nave by arcades. On the front wall of the choir is a room-high painting by the artist Maria Hiller – Foell (1880–1943) - a student of Adolf Hölzel . It shows, framed by a round arch, the Transfiguration of Christ , the theme that gave the church its name. Another noteworthy work of art is the Way of the Cross by artist Michaela A. Fischer , which was added in 2019 .
