Tacinga inamoena is a species of the genus Tacinga in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet means "unattractive, unpleasant". Portuguese common names are "Quipá", "Guíbá", "Palmatória", "Palmatória Miuda", "Iviro", "Gogóia" and "Palma de Ovelha".

Tacinga inamoena grows shrubby, creeping, is richly branched and reaches stature heights of up to 50 centimeters and diameter of 3.5 meters. The shoots are divided into light green to gray-green, circular to obovate or elongated segments, which are usually clearly flattened. The segments are up to 16 inches long, 9 inches wide and up to 3.5 inches thick. Their surface is sometimes slightly humped. The small, gray to yellow areoles are covered with very small, sunken glochids . There are no thorns .

The red or orange, wide-open flowers are up to 5.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4 centimeters. Their bracts are spread out, the pericarpell is spherical. The spherical fruits turn dark brown, yellow or orange and are covered with a few glochids. They are up to 4 centimeters long and contain many seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Tacinga inamoena is widespread in eastern Brazil on rocks or stony subsoil in the Caatinga and Campo Rupestre vegetation at altitudes of 100 to 1550 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia inamoena in 1890 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Nigel Paul Taylor and Wolfgang Hermann Stuppy placed them in the genus Tacinga in 2002 . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Tacinga inamoena subsp. inamoena
  • Tacinga inamoena subsp. subcylindric

Tacinga inamoena is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
