The Day of the programmer ( Russian День программиста ) is a Russian Memorial Day , which is celebrated on the 256th day of the year. This is September 13th; in leap years, however, September 12th. The number 256 is well known to every programmer , it is a power of two 2 8 and corresponds to the number of possible values ​​of a byte (see 255 for further explanations).

Programmer's Day is a “ professional memorial day”. Russia has some of these memorial days, each of which honors the specialists of a particular profession. But these are not days off.

Origin of the day of remembrance

Programmer's Day was suggested by Valentin Balt and Michael Cherviakov, both employees of the software company Parallel Technologies. They began collecting signatures in 2002 for a petition to the Russian government to officially recognize the Memorial Day. In 2007 the English-language website “Programmer Day” was launched to make the idea of ​​the day known worldwide.

On July 24, 2009, the Russian Ministry of Communications and Media adopted a draft ordinance for the new memorial day. On September 11, 2009, the President of Russia Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev signed the regulation.
