The days of early music in Herne are an annual music festival in Herne (North Rhine-Westphalia) that has been held since 1976 . They are among the world's most important festivals for early music .

The festival in November is a meeting point for instrument makers, scientists and lovers of early music. The days of early music were introduced in 1976 by Joachim Hengelhaupt, then Herne City Director and Head of Culture. Since 1980 the Westdeutsche Rundfunk Köln has been involved in the music festival as organizer of the concerts. After Klaus L. Neumann and Barbara Schwendowius, Richard Lorber has been the artistic director of the festival there since 2004. All concerts are recorded and broadcast live or with a time delay on the cultural radio WDR 3.

An integral part of the days of early music is a musical instrument fair, a themed exhibition of high-quality instruments that is also a sales fair. Exhibitions of historical instruments were also organized at times.

The scientific supervision of the event lies with Christian Ahrens from the Musicological Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum . A special symposium has been held since 1999 as part of the Days of Early Music.

The Kulturpolitische Forum WDR 3 has been taking place within the framework of the festival since 2004, a panel discussion on current issues in musical life.

The venues for the days of early music are or were the cultural center in Herne , the Westphalian Museum of Archeology , the Mont-Cenis Academy , the artists mine Unser Fritz , Strünkede Castle and the Martin Opitz Library . Churches in the inner city are also used for concerts with a religious theme, for example the Kreuzkirche and the Herz Jesu Church .

Recordings of the concerts are released on sound carriers by the city of Herne and Westdeutscher Rundfunk in the following year. In addition, catalogs for the exhibitions and trade fairs as well as symposium volumes for the scientific conferences are published.
