The Kreuzkirche in Herne-Mitte is a church building of the Evangelical Kreuzkirchengemeinde in Herne . The church is also the venue for the early music days in Herne , which take place every November .

Predecessor structure

The origin of the Protestant parish was the Romanesque St. Dionysius Church in the middle of the parish village of Herne. This was not dilapidated in 1872, but far too small for the steadily growing number of parishioners.

Building history

On January 25, 1869, the parish presbytery decided to collect an annual church tax apportionment of 1,000 thalers for a new building from 1870 on, but it wasn't until July 1871 that the plans got underway and the church building fund was increased to 1,500 thalers .

After the community had grown enormously through mining and the capacity of the old church was no longer sufficient, the problem of the building site had to be solved; one side insisted on the old location, the other then finally prevailed with the new garden behind the pastorei.

After a site inspection in July 1872, the Essen architects Julius Flügge and Peter Zindel were entrusted with the design and construction management. The plans along with the estimated costs of 64,300 thalers were approved by the Arnsberg district government on December 13, 1873 . On May 2, 1873, the community entrusted the master mason Dieckhoff from Herne and the carpenter Stamm with the construction.

On May 15, 1873, the new building began with the demolition of the old church tower in order to reuse its stones for the foundation of the new church. After the walls were already one meter high, the foundation stone was laid on October 5th, 1873 (Thanksgiving) . In November 1873 Pastor Dransfeld established a budget of around 90,000 thalers, this sum should be covered by loans. Ultimately, the total cost was well over 100,000 thalers or 300,000 marks . The tower was completed on July 3, 1875, the weathercock was set on October 2, 1875 and the new church was consecrated on December 2, 1875.

The church is 44 meters long and 27.5 meters high. The tower measures a total of 57.5 meters up to the cock. The church was built in exposed brickwork from red bricks , the structures are made of sandstone . The interior is designed as a hall church with galleries , the choir has a five-eighth end . For more than 80 years the church was called the Evangelical Main Church, until it was officially named Kreuzkirche in 1963 .

Furnishing

In 2006 the interior was renovated by the architects Hülsmann & Boländer from Bochum / Warstein.

  • Addition of a retable , a new three-winged altarpiece to complement the historical altar.
  • New baptismal font from 2006 in the center of a circle of chairs in front of the high altar.

window

The church window was designed between 1951 and 1953 according to designs by the painter Rudolf Fuchs.

organ

The organ was built in 1877 by Johann Friedrich Schulze & Sons from Paulinzella in Thuringia and in 1902 by the Ludwigsburg organ builder EF Walcker & Cie. enlarged. Alfred Raupach from Hattingen carried out further modifications in 1954 and Klaus Becker from Kupfermühle near Hamburg in 1979 . The alterations and renovations of the church severely affected the organ, so that it was finally decided to restore it to its original state. This work was carried out from May 10, 2010 to November 28, 2010 by the companies Schumacher Baelen in Belgium and the organ builder Björn-Daniel Reich from Cologne .
