The Taimyr Island ( Russian Таймыр ) is a 350 square kilometer island in the Kara Sea in the Asian part of Russia .

geography

The island lies in front of the Taimyr Peninsula of the same name , from which it is separated by the Taimyr Strait, which is barely a kilometer wide at its narrowest point . The road, like the Pallanderstraße that adjoins it to the west , is mostly covered by pack ice . The Taimyrgolf extends east of the island, to the north it is separated from the Nordenskiöld archipelago by the Matissen Strait . In the west and north of Taimyr, Pilot Machotkin Island , Pilot Alexejew Island , Moissejew Island and other smaller islands are in front of Taimyr . In some cases, Taimyr Island and the surrounding islands are also assigned to the Nordenskiöld Archipelago as the sixth group of islands.

Taimyr Island is about 37 kilometers long and 18.5 kilometers wide in a west-east direction. The highest point is the 235 meter high mountain Negri . The coast is very indented.

The island is uninhabited today.

The island consists of sandstone and slate , which are covered by Quaternary deposits.

history

The island was discovered and named during the first crossing of the Northeast Passage by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld in 1878 with the auxiliary sailor Vega . On the southwest coast of the island, Nordenskiöld left a four-meter-high wooden mast on a boulder, which was rediscovered during the mapping of the island in 1971.
