Taishi Kakka no Ryōrinin ( Japanese 大使 閣下 の 料理 人 , also Le Chef Cuisinier de L'Ambassadeur , German both "The Ambassador's Chef") is a manga series by the author Mitsuru Nishimura and the illustrator Hiroshi Kawasumi . It was released in Japan from 1998 to 2006 and was made a television film in 2015. The work is about a cook who works in the Japanese embassy in Vietnam and can be classified into the genres of gourmet and his own.

content

Kō Ōsawa works as a cook in a fine Tokyo hotel. But when he received an offer to cook in the Japanese embassy in Vietnam one day, he took the opportunity to change his career, left his family in Japan and accepted the job. At his new workplace, Kō first has to get used to the other conditions, customs and the kitchen with the support of his assistant Hoa Minh. In doing so, he initially steps into some faux pas and experiences the effects of prejudices or ignorance about his host country. With the help of Hoa Minh and the street girl Ain, Kō succeeds after some time to adapt to the country and to satisfy his employer with his own creations.

Creation and publication

Author Mitsuru Nishimura himself worked as a cook for a long time - similar to his protagonist, initially in a Japanese hotel and in the 1990s in the Japanese embassies in Brunei and Vietnam. The series was published from 1998 to 2006 in Morning magazine by Kodansha . This brought out the chapters collected in 25 volumes. The manga was published in Chinese translation by Sharp Point Press in Taiwan.

filming

Based on a script by Yoshihiro Izumi and directed by Yūichi Satō , a film adaptation of the manga was made for Japanese television. Shō Sakurai was engaged for the main role , in other roles Gōriki Ayame , Nishida Toshiyuki , Okura Koji , Shigeaki Kato and Hirosue Ryoko could be seen. The producer was Masataka Takamaru . The film aired on Fuji TV on January 3, 2015 .

reception

The draftsman Hiroshi Kawasumi was awarded the 30th Chiba Tetsuya Prize for his work on Taishi Kakka no Ryōrinin , because, unlike in ordinary cookery mangas, he moves people's hearts with his drawings. The Animania also writes an educational function to the manganese in addition to the entertainment. He was supposed to sensitize Japanese who went abroad for work to consider considerate and tolerant behavior in the host countries. The story also provides a lot of regional and, of course, culinary information about Vietnam. Typical for the genre, the dishes are presented in a detailed and seductive way. The drawing style, on the other hand, corresponds more to the taste of older readers, is text-heavy and the page design is confusing. The occasional excursions into high politics would also spoil the reading pleasure.
