The Taiya River is a river in southeast Alaska .

It flows from the border with British Columbia in Canada into the Taiya Inlet of the Inside Passage .

Despite its only 27 kilometers in length, the Taiya flows through several ecosystems . From alpine tundra at its source to temperate rainforest at the mouth, it crosses a wide range of different flora and fauna . The narrow valley of the Taiya with its steep flanks was formed by glaciers . The river itself is fed by several small glaciers.

The name Taiya was adopted from the Tlingit language in common parlance. The river gained importance at the end of the 19th century through the town of Dyea located at its mouth , which during the gold rush on the Klondike River was the starting point for prospectors for the route over the Chilkoot Pass . The river frozen over in winter made it much easier to transport the equipment, especially through the canyon between Canyon City and Pleasant Camp .

Today the Taiya is part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and is used for rafting tours organized from Skagway . The migratory fish population makes the river a popular destination for anglers.
