Takanyi Garanganga (born September 6, 1990 in Harare ) is a Zimbabwean tennis player . In 2011 he won the gold medal at the African Games in singles.

Career

Garanganga started playing tennis at the age of eight and was already considered a promising talent as a youth player. On the ITF Junior Tour he played over 100 matches between 2003 and 2008 and was able to achieve his highest position in the junior world rankings in March 2008 with 17th place. During this time he became aware of Brian de Villiers, a tennis coach who took him to the United States. There he graduated from high school in Pennsylvania, but decided against offers from some universities to play college tennis and instead concentrate on his professional career.

At the professional level, the Zimbabwean played regularly on the third-class ITF Future Tour from 2008 onwards . In 2010 he reached the first final there, and in 2012 he successfully qualified for a challenger tournament in Honolulu for the first time . In the same year, he also won the first three future titles in the individual, which allowed him to finish the year in the top 500. In 2011 he was the winner of the African Games , in the final he defeated the Egyptian Sherif Sabry , in doubles he also won the bronze medal. In the following years he was able to maintain his ranking through small successes. So he moved into his first Challenger quarter-finals in Binghamton in July 2013 . Here he lost to Rhyne Williams after he had to give up in the second set. In November of the same year he went a step further in Knoxville and lost in the semifinals to Peter Polansky . He finished the year the highest in the world rankings with rank 363 . In 2014 he repeated reaching the semi-finals in Binghampton , but did not reach a main field on the ATP World Tour despite several attempts. In 2014 Garanganga made it to Continental Group II with the Zimbabwean Davis Cup team , for which he has played since 2007, and has been held since then.

Garanganga stayed in the top 500 until 2018 and won his eighth future title this year. In August he made the 23rd attempt to qualify for a tournament on the World Tour in Los Cabos . After wins against Evan King and Luis Patiño , he lost there in the main draw against Thomas Fabbiano in three sets. He achieved his best placement in the world rankings in September 2014 with place 288.
