Takashi Amano ( Japanese 天野 尚 Amano Takashi ; born July 18, 1954 in Maki , Nishikambara-gun (now Nishikan-ku , Niigata ), Japan ; † August 4, 2015 ibid) was a Japanese photographer , designer , author , cyclist and Aquarist . He had specialized in particular in the design and photography of aquariums .

Amano is considered to be one of the most influential personalities within the aquarium hobby and has significantly shaped the so-called natural aquarium . It can be attributed to him that Japanese garden art established itself as a design element in the planting and design of aquariums. Asymmetrical arrangements of aquatic plants with stones and wooden roots were typical for him. He took up design elements of Zen Buddhism . His philosophy was to create particularly attractive living spaces. The aim for him was not to exactly replicate models from nature, but to design imaginable biotopes with the means of aquascaping . For example, Amano combined plants that come from different continents and socialized organisms whose habitats do not overlap in the wild.

Invertebrates also played a major role in his community aquariums . The establishment of the Amano shrimp in aquaristics, for example, can be traced back to him. In addition, he often used ear grated catfish to combat algae . As plants, he preferred to use Australian tongue leaf (Glossostigma elatinoides) and flooding pond liver moss (Riccia fluitans) .

With his company Aqua Design Amano , or ADA for short , Amano brought out its own aquarium products. In addition to accessories for planting the basins, he attached great importance to the fact that his products fit in as inconspicuously and harmoniously as possible in the natural aquarium and thus not disturb the view of the plant design. That is why some of his aquariums, for example, are made of full glass, without silicone bonding, or with CO 2 measuring devices made of transparent glass.

Amano was the founder of the International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest (IAPLC), a competition in which natural aquarium designs are awarded.

Takashi Amano died on August 4, 2015 of pneumonia.
