Takashi Sugimura ( Japanese 杉 村 隆 , Sugimura Takashi ; born April 20, 1926 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese biochemist, known for fundamental research on the chemical mechanism of cancer production by carcinogens . He was director of the National Cancer Research Center in Japan and from 1994 to 2000 rector of Tōhō University .

Career

Sugimura studied medicine at the University of Tokyo and after graduating in 1949 was an assistant in the radiology department of the University of Tokyo. From 1954 he was an assistant at the Cancer Research Institute of the Japanese Society for Cancer Research. In 1957 he was on a study visit at the National Cancer Institute in the USA and in 1959 at Case Western Reserve University . From 1962 to 1972 he was the director of the biochemistry department of the Research Institute of the Japanese National Cancer Research Center and from 1972 he was deputy director of the research institute from 1974 to 1984. From 1984 to 1991 he was director of the National Cancer Center itself in Japan and since 1992 honorary director. From 1992 to 1994 he was an advisor to the Ministry of Health and Welfare . 1970 to 1985 he was also a professor at the medical faculty of the University of Tokyo.

In 1957 he demonstrated the carcinogenic effect of the mutagenic substance 4- nitro - quinoline- 1-oxide. In 1966 he found out that MNNG (N-methyl-N'-nitro-nitroso-guanidine) causes cancer in rats ( fibrosarcomas when injected under the skin, in 1967 he was able to induce gastric cancer in rats through oral administration of MNNG). Sugimura was one of the first to demonstrate a connection between mutagenicity and cancer production.

In 1969 he received the Prize of the Princess Takamatsu Cancer Foundation, in 1974 the Takeda Medicine Prize , in 1976 the Imperial Prize of the Japanese Academy of Sciences , in 1978 he was named Bunka Kōrōsha, person of special cultural merit and he was awarded the Order of Culture , in 1981 the Ernst W. Bertner Memorial Award and the Charles S. Mott Prize for Cancer Research, the Yoshida Prize of the Japanese Cancer Association (JCA) in 1992 , and in 1996 he became Officier de l ' Ordre national du mérite . In 1997 he received the Japan Prize with Bruce N. Ames . In addition to the Japanese Academy of Sciences, he is also a member of the American National Academy of Sciences , the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is an honorary member of many other national and international scientific societies.
