Take Me As I Am ( English for take me as I am ) is an English-language rock song that was composed and interpreted by Tornike Kipiani . With the title he should represent Georgia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

On December 31, Kipiani won the show Georgian Idol 2020 , which also served as the selection of the artist for the Eurovision Song Contest. In contrast to the previous year, the corresponding song will be selected internally at a later date.

A month later it was announced that Kipiani's song would be titled Take Me As I Am . This was first published on March 2, 2020.

Kipiani wrote the lyrics and composed the title himself. He arranged and produced it with Aleko Berdsenishvili.

The music video was presented to the public for the first time when the song was released. The director was Temo K Wirkwelia. It shows Kipiani and his team recording the piece in the studio.

Music and lyrics

The title is described as a mixture of classic rock , electro and dubstep . The dubstep parts are mainly present in the chorus, where the singer sometimes uses guttural singing . The song is made up of two stanzas, which alternate with a chorus. This contains the phrase “I love you” in Italian , Spanish , French and German . The part is mainly carried by the accompanying singers. The content is about the singer and his counterpart, whom he accuses of not loving him because he feels compelled to fulfill various European stereotypes . He asks the other person why they cannot take him as he is (see title).

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Georgia should have performed this song in the second semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled. He would have been accompanied on stage by Mariko Leschawa, Aleko Berdsenishvili and Mariam Schengelia. The choreography was to be developed by Emilia Sandquist.

reception

Joshua Kucera from Eurasianet said the Georgian contribution portrayed the rejection of the West in a sullen way. The song complains that one is forced to adopt European values. He sees a connection to the current Georgian politics, which strive for rapprochement with the West and a detachment from Russia.

ESCXtra spoke of a brave decision, but criticized the lyrics. Georgia saved Ukraine from last place with the title Solowej . According to Eurovisionary, the title would have enriched the musical variety in Rotterdam. The singer was the right choice for Georgian Idol. At ESC Kompakt, Take Me As I Am left "many question marks". Apart from the courage of the radio and the singer's “honest, powerful singing”, everything else should “actually get a point deduction”.
