The Andong Dam ( kor .: 안동댐 Andong-daem ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in Chungcheongbuk-do Province , South Korea . It dams the Nakdong to a reservoir. The associated pumped storage power plant has an installed capacity of 90  MW . Andong city is about 4 km downstream .

The dam was built from 1971 to 1976. In addition to generating electricity, it is also used for flood protection and drinking water supply. The power station is owned by Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water) (ENDE); however, it is operated by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with a height of 83 m. The length of the dam crest is 612 m and its width 8 m. At the base of the foundation , the dam is 200 m wide. The volume of the structure is 4.014 million m³. The flood relief is on the left side of the dam.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 160 m above sea level , the reservoir extends over an area of around 60 km² and holds 1.248 billion m³ of water.

The Andong reservoir was connected to the neighboring reservoir of the Imha dam by a tunnel (length 1925 m; diameter 5.5 m). The tunnel is at a height of 141 m above sea level, so that the water can basically flow in both directions. The aim of the tunnel is to ensure that less water at the Imha dam, when there is a strong inflow into the reservoir, has to be diverted unused via the flood relief, by diverting it to the larger Andong reservoir in this case.

power plant

The power plant has an installed capacity of 90  MW . The two machines in the power plant each have a maximum output of 45 MW; they can also be operated as pump turbines . The machine house is at the foot of the dam.

About 3 km downstream of the dam is a weir with a height of 20 m and a length of 238 m. Its reservoir forms the lower basin for the pumping operation.

The Andritz AG was commissioned to renew the two turbines by mid-2019 the job. The new turbines have a maximum output of 46.3 MW each. Their nominal speed is 189.5 / min. The maximum height of fall is 57 m. The nominal voltage of the associated generators is 12  kV .
