The Belmeken Dam is located in the Pazardzhik Oblast , Bulgaria . It dams the Kriva to a reservoir. The town of Belovo is located about 10 km northeast of the dam. The dam was completed in 1974.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with a height of 88.2 m above the foundation level . The length of the dam crest is 737.5 m. The top of the dam is at an altitude of 1923 m above sea level . The dam has a clay core for sealing.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 8 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 14 m³ / s via the flood discharge.

On the opposite side of the reservoir, about 3 km southwest of the main dam, there is another earthfill dam with a height of 23.1 m above the foundation level. The length of the secondary dam is 537 m at the crown. The top of the dam is at a height of 1922.80 m above sea level. The secondary dam also has a clay core for sealing.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 1920.5 m (max. 1921 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 4.5 km² and holds 144 million m³ of water - 141 million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity. The minimum congestion target up to which electricity generation is still possible is 1865 m.

Power plants

Two tunnels lead from the Belmeken reservoir, through which the following hydropower plants are supplied with the necessary water. The Belmeken power plant is first supplied via a tunnel, then the water is forwarded to the Sestrimo power plant and from there to the Momina Klisoura power plant. Another tunnel connects the reservoir with the Chaira pumped storage power plant.

Belmeken power plant

The Belmeken power plant is located approximately 4 km northeast of the Belmeken dam. It has a total installed capacity of 479 MW , which is divided into 5 Pelton turbines with 75 MW each and 2 Francis pump turbines with 52 MW each. The water is then forwarded from the Belmeken power plant to the Sestrimo power plant.

Sestrimo power plant

The Sestrimo power plant is located approximately 5 km northeast of the Belmeken power plant. It has a total installed capacity of 240 MW (2 Pelton turbines with 120 MW each).

Momina Klisura power plant

The Momina Klisura power plant is located approximately 5 km northeast of the Sestrimo power plant. It has a total installed capacity of 120 MW (2 Francis turbines with 60 MW each).

Chaira pumped storage power plant

The Chaira pumped storage power plant is located approximately 3.5 km southeast of the Belmeken dam. It has a total installed capacity of 864 MW (4 Francis pump turbines with a capacity of 216 MW each).
