The power plant Belmeken is a hydroelectric power plant in Pazardzhik Province , Bulgaria . It has an installed capacity of 479 MW . The power plant uses the water from the Belmeken Dam, 4 km away, to generate electricity. The town of Belovo is about 8 km northeast of the power plant.

The power plant is owned by Nazionalna elektritscheska kompanija EAD (NEK EAD) and is also operated by NEK EAD.

power plant

The power plant went into operation in 1974 and is used to cover peak loads . It has an installed capacity of 479 MW . The average annual production is 331 million kWh . The fall height is 730 m.

The 5 Pelton turbines have an output of 75 MW each. Thanks to the 2 Francis pump turbines , each with an output of 52 MW, the power plant can also be used as a pumped storage power plant .

Upper basin

The reservoir of the Belmeken dam supplies the power plant with the necessary water. In the pumping operation, the reservoir serves as the upper basin.

Lower basin (Stankowi Baraki dam)

A stone embankment dam was built near the power plant with a height of 37 m above the foundation level , the Stankowi Baraki dam . The length of the dam crest is 100 m. The top of the dam is at an altitude of 1185 m above sea level . The dam has a clay core for sealing.

With the normal storage target of 1183 m (max. 1184.20 m), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.022 km² and holds 0.42 million m³ of water - 0.375 million m³ of this can be used for pumping. The minimum water level up to which the pumping is still possible is 1167 m.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 3.6 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 103 m³ / s via the flood discharge.

A tunnel (length 3456 m, diameter 4.10 m) leads from the reservoir to the Sestrimo power station .
