The Chaira pumped storage power plant is located in the Pazardzhik Oblast , Bulgaria . It has an installed capacity of 864 MW . The pumped storage power plant uses the water from the Belmeken Dam, 3.5 km away, to generate electricity.
The power plant is owned by Nazionalna elektritscheska kompanija EAD (NEK EAD) and is also operated by NEK EAD.
power plant
The power plant went into operation in 1995 and is used to cover peak loads . It has an installed capacity of 864 MW (in pumping mode the power consumption is 788 MW). The average annual production is 342 million kWh . The four Francis turbines are designed as pump turbines and can each have a maximum output of 216 MW. To avoid cavitation, they are located below the geodetic suction height in an underground machine hall. The drop height is 690 m and the maximum flow is a total of 36 m³ / s.
Upper basin
The reservoir of the Belmeken dam serves as the upper basin.
Lower basin (Chaira dam)
One was about half a kilometer from the power plant from 1985 to 1988 gravity dam made of concrete with a height of 85 m above the foundation bed built. The length of the top of the wall is 305 m. The top of the wall is at an altitude of 1263 m above sea level .
At the normal storage target of 1260 m (max. 1261.30 m) the reservoir holds 5.6 million m³ of water - 4.2 million m³ of this can be used for pumping. The minimum water level up to which the pumping is still possible is 1231 m.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 20.27 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 72 m³ / s via the flood discharge.
