The dam Casa de Piedra ( Spanish Represa Casa de Piedra or Dique Casa de Piedra ) is a dam with a hydroelectric power station in Argentina . It dams the Río Colorado , which at this point forms the border between the provinces of La Pampa and Río Negro , into a reservoir. The dam and the associated hydropower plant are also known as the Casa de Piedra hydropower plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico Casa de Piedra ).

The dam is used for water supply and electricity generation. Its construction began in October 1984. It was completed in September 1993. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are owned by the state ( Prov. Bs. As., La Pampa y Río Negro ).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a rubble dam with a height of 45 m above the river bed . The top of the dam is at a height of 287.2 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 10,781 m, its width at the crown 10 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 12.55 million m³. The dam has a flood relief system , through which a maximum of 3081 m³ / s can be discharged.

Reservoir

The normal target is between 275 and 283 m. With a storage target of 283 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 347.71 km² and holds 3.55 billion m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 285.5 m, the minimum 265 m.

power plant

The power plant's machine house is at the foot of the dam on the right-hand side. The installed capacity is 60  MW . The average annual generation is given as 240 (or 297) million  kWh . The power plant went into operation in August 1996.

The two Francis turbines have a maximum output of 30 MW each. The rated speed of the turbines is 157.9 min −1 . The fall height is between 30 and 40 m. The flow rate is 90 m³ / s (maximum 185, minimum 50 m³ / s).
