The Cirata dam is a dam with a hydropower plant in the Jawa Barat province , Indonesia . It dams the Citarum to a reservoir.

The dam is primarily used to generate electricity and also for flood protection, irrigation and drinking water supply. Initial studies for the project were carried out from September 1980. The dam was built between 1984 and 1988. It is owned by PT Pembangkitan Jawa-Bali (PT PJB) and is also operated by PT PJB.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a CFR dam with a height of 125 m. The top of the dam is at a height of 225 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 453 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 3.9 million m³. The dam has a flood relief system that can discharge a maximum of 5900 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With a reservoir target of 220 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 62 km² and holds 2.165 (or 1.973) billion m³ of water, of which 796 million m³. can be used to generate electricity. The minimum congestion target for power generation is 205 m; at this dam target, the reservoir holds 1.177 billion m³ of water.

1500 families had to be relocated for the construction of the dam. In order to give these families a new livelihood, fish farms with more than 25,000 cages were set up on the reservoir by 1996, which in 1996 produced over 42,000 t of fish.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 1008 (or 1040) MW, the power plant is one of the most powerful hydropower plants in Indonesia; it is used to cover peak loads . The average annual generation is given as 1.426 billion kWh .

The eight Francis turbines are located in an underground cavern (length 253 m, width 25 m, height 49.5 m). The turbines have a maximum output of 125 (or 129.6) MW each and the associated generators 140 MVA each . The machines were put into operation in several phases; the first two machines went into operation in April 1988, the next two followed in October 1988. The remaining four machines went online in 1997 and 1998.

The fall height is 112.5 m. The maximum flow is 540 m³ / s.

Others

The World Bank estimated the total cost of Phase II of the project (installation of the remaining four machines) at USD 400 million . They made a loan of $ 104 million.
