The Lichtenberg dam is a dam in the Free State of Saxony near Lichtenberg / Erzgebirge in the district of Central Saxony . It serves the drinking water supply , the flood protection , the low water increase and the power generation . It is a "large dam" according to ICOLD criteria. The dam of the Lichtenberg dam is a straight rock rubble dam with a bituminous outer skin seal. It was built from 1966 to 1975 near Frauenstein in the Ore Mountains (commissioning in 1975). On the air side , the dam has two berms . There is a tower in the reservoir that is used to remove the water and as a flood relief. The dammed body of water is the Gimmlitz .
A raw water pipe leads from the Rauschenbach dam and continues from here to the Klingenberg dam .
The top of the dam is open to the public. There are some exhibits to visit there. Swimming and recreational sports in the reservoir are not possible. But there is a circular hiking trail around the reservoir. Fishing is only permitted for the Southern Saxony Angler Association.
The Lichtenberg dam has a pre- dam (Dittersbach) and two pre-basins (Dittersbach and Burkersdorf).
