The Peñarroya Dam ( Presa de Peñarroya in Spanish ) is a dam in the municipality of Argamasilla de Alba , Ciudad Real Province , Spain . It dams the Guadiana into a reservoir. The dam is used for drinking water supply and irrigation. It was completed in 1959. The dam is state-owned.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 44 (or 50) m above the foundation base . The top of the wall lies at a height of 738 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 250 (or 251) m. The volume of the dam is 150,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 12 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 540 (or 630) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 560 (or 678) m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 735 m, the reservoir extends over an area of ​​around 4.12 (or 4.25) km² and holds 50 (or 51) million m³ of water.

Others

On the right bank is the Peñarroya Castle ( Castillo de Peñarroya in Spanish ) in the immediate vicinity of the dam.
