It dams the Guadiana , which forms the border between the municipalities of Campanario and Orellana la Vieja , into a reservoir. The dam is used to generate electricity as well as irrigation and drinking water supply. It was completed in 1961 (or 1963). The dam is state-owned and operated by Endesa Generacion SA .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 63 (or 63.5) m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 320 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 737 m. The volume of the dam is 521,110 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 69 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 3300 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 4400 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 318 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 48.63 (or 55.57) km² and holds 808 (or 824) million m³ of water; 478 million m³ of this can be used. The reservoir extends over a length of 37 km.

power plant

The installed capacity of the power plant is 15 (or 18 or 18.53) MW . The machine house is located below the dam on the right side of the river. Another power plant with an installed capacity of 2 (or 3.65 or 4.5) MW is located on the irrigation canal that leads from the dam.
