The Pedrógão Dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Pedrógão ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . It damms the Guadiana River into a reservoir. The eponymous municipality of Pedrógão is about one kilometer west of the dam. The Alqueva dam is about ten kilometers northeast .

The project to build the dam started in 2002. The construction was completed in 2005 (or 2006). In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for irrigation. It is owned by the Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infra-estruturas do Alqueva, SA (EDIA).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of rolled concrete with a height of 43 m above the foundation level (34.50 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 94.10 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 448 (or 473) m and its width is 7 m. The volume of the structure is 340,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 27 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 12,000 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 12,000 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 84.80 m (maximum 91.80 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 11.04 km² and holds 106 million m³ of water - 54 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum congestion destination is 79 m.

The reservoir serves primarily as a lower basin for the Alqueva pumped storage power plant .

power plant

With an installed capacity of 10  MW, the Pedrógão power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual production is 45 million kWh .

The two Kaplan turbines each produce a maximum of 5.2 MW, while the associated generators produce 5.7  MVA . The rated speed of the turbines is 333.3 / min. The nominal voltage of the generators is 6  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6 kV is increased to 60 kV by means of a power transformer.

The minimum height of fall is 17.5 m, the maximum 24.5 m. The maximum flow rate is 24.9 m³ / s per turbine.

The power plant is owned by EDIA, but operated by EDP.
