The Playas dam is located in the Antioquia department in central Colombia , 70 km east of the city of Medellín . The dam was built to generate electricity. The system is operated by Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM).
dam
The dam dams the Río Guatapé almost 10 km east of the small town of San Rafael . The road from San Rafael to San Carlos leads past the dam. The dam was built in the early 2010s. It consists of a 65 m high earth embankment . The wall volume is 1.9 million m³. The dam has a crown length of about 590 m. At the western end there is a flood relief system with a chute , which is designed for a discharge of 2800 m³ / s.
Reservoir
The heavily branched Playas reservoir (Spanish: Embalse Playas or Embalse de las Playas ) has a maximum water surface of 737 ha. The reservoir target is around 975 m. The storage volume is 69 million m³. The Río Guatapè, which previously received the water from the Guatapé hydropower plant , flows into the western end of the reservoir. On the northern shore of the lake, the water from the Jaguas hydropower plant , which in turn receives the water from the San Lorenzo dam on the Río Nare , enters the reservoir. The mean discharge is therefore 113 m³ / s. The upper end of the Punchiná reservoir is 9 km downstream .
Hydroelectric power plant
The Playas hydropower plant (span. Central Hidroeléctrica Playas ) is a cavern power plant . It consists of 3 units. Each unit has a vertically oriented Francis turbine with an output of 68 MW. The fall height is 176 m. The expansion water volume per turbine is 42.1 m³ / s, the turbines rotate at a speed of 360 / min. The average annual energy production is 1370 GWh.
