River course
The Río Nare drains an area of about 5000 km² in the east of the Central Cordillera east of the city of Medellín . At the upper reaches of the Río Nare is dammed up to the reservoir Peñol-Guatapé . Its most important tributary is the Río Negro , whose headwaters are 2 km north of the town of Marinilla . Most of the water from the reservoir is fed to the Guatapé hydropower plant and flows below it into the Guatapé River . Only a small amount of water reaches the river bed of the Río Nare below a weir. This initially flows north. At river km 90 the river passes through the village of Alejandría . After another 5 km, the Río Nare turns east. At river kilometer 65, the flow of which is dam Guillermo Cano for Reservoir San Lorenzo dammed. The water is transported south to the Jaguas hydropower plant and then reaches the Playas reservoir , which lies on the course of the Río Guatapé. Below the Guillermo Cano dam, the Río Nare has very little water. At river kilometer 24, the Río Samaná Norte meets the Río Nare when coming from the south. The Río Samaná Norte, which is much richer in water at the confluence, receives part of its water via the Río Guatapé from the upper and middle reaches of the Río Nare. Below the confluence, the Río Nare flows 7 km north-east-east before making an abrupt change in direction to the south-east. 16 km above the estuary there is a small hydropower plant from the cement manufacturer Argos on the left bank of the river . At river kilometer 7, the Río Nus meets the Río Nare when coming from the north. This finally flows into the Río Magdalena near Puerto Nare . The airport ( IATA code NAR) of Puerto Nare is located on the northern bank of the river immediately above the estuary .
