The San Roque dam ( Spanish Represa San Roque or Dique San Roque ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of Cordoba , Argentina . It dams the Río Suquía to a reservoir. The dam and the associated hydroelectric power plant are also known as the San Roque hydroelectric power plant complex (Spanish: Complejo hidroeléctrico San Roque ). The city of Cordoba is around 20 km east of the dam.

The dam is used to supply drinking water and generate electricity. Construction of the dam began in 1939. It was completed in 1944. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Empresa Prov. De Energía Córdoba ).

Barrier structure

The remains of the old dam wall

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 44.3 m above the river bed . The top of the wall is at a height of 652.3 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 145 m, its width at the crown 5 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 89,000 m³. The dam has a flood relief system ( overflow funnel type ) through which a maximum of 280 m³ / s can be discharged.

About 150 m upriver from today's dam are the remains of the old dam, which can still be seen at low tide. The original dam was built in the 1880s by engineer Carlos Cassaffousth and inaugurated on April 12, 1890. After the new dam was built in 1944, the old dam wall was supposed to be blown up, but only partially succeeded.

Reservoir

The normal destination is between 627 and 643.3 m. With a storage target of 643.3 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 16.39 km² and holds 190.52 million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 651 m.

power plant

The power plant's machine house is about 4 km from the dam on the right bank of the river. The installed capacity is 24  MW . The average annual production is given as 60 million  kWh .

The 4 Francis turbines have a maximum output of 6 MW each. The nominal speed of the turbines is 600 min −1 . The height of fall is between 105 and 130 m.
