The Sordo Dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Sordo ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Vila Real district . It dams the Sordo , a right (western) tributary of the Corgo, to a small reservoir. The town of Vila Real is about four kilometers northeast of the dam. The A4 motorway runs north of the reservoir.

The project to build the dam began in 1991. The construction was completed in 1997. In addition to supplying drinking water, the dam is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Serviços Municipalizados de Vila Real .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 36 m above the foundation level (33 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 527 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 108 m and its width 6 m. The volume of the structure is 35,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 200 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 365 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 522.5 m (maximum 525.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.084 km² and holds 1 million m³ of water, of which 0.85 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion destination is 507 m.

power plant

Two Pelton turbines with a maximum output of 10 MW together are  installed. The average annual production is 25 million kWh .
