The Soyang Dam (or Soyanggang ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in Gangwon-do Province , South Korea . It dams the Soyang into a reservoir. The associated power plant has an installed capacity of 200 MW . A few kilometers downstream is the city of Chuncheon .
The first plans for the construction of the dam were carried out in 1966. Construction of the dam began in 1967; it was completed in 1973. In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for flood protection and drinking water supply. It is owned by Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with a height of 123 m. The length of the dam crest is 530 m. The crest of the dam is at a height of 203 m above sea level . The volume of the structure is 9.6 million m³.
The flood relief is on the left side of the dam. The design flood was originally calculated at 12,392 m³ / s; Due to the extreme rainfall that occurred in 1984 and 1990, the design flood was redefined at 20,715 m³ / s.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 193.5 m (max. 198 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 70 km² and holds 2.9 billion m³ of water.
power plant
With 3 Francis turbines, the power plant has an installed capacity of 200 MW . The average annual production is 353 million kWh . The machine house is on the right side of the river at the foot of the dam.
The fall height is 90 m. The maximum flow rate is 251 m³ / s.
