The Vale do Rossim dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Vale do Rossim ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Guarda district . It dams the Ribeira da Fervença to a reservoir. The dam is located in the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela nature reserve . The small town of Seia is about ten kilometers to the northwest. The Lagoacho dam is about three kilometers and the Lagoa Comprida dam about six kilometers southwest of the Vale do Rossim dam.

The dam was completed in 1956. It is used to generate electricity. The dam is owned by HIDROCENEL, Energia do Centro, SA .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of masonry and concrete with a height of 27 m above the foundation level (17.46 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 1,437.5 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 375 m and its width 1.5 m. The volume of the structure is 25,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 10 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 66 m³ / s via the flood discharge.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 1,436 m (maximum 1,436.75 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.37 km² and holds 3.5 million m³ of water - 3.4 million m³ of this can be used.

The reservoir is connected to the reservoir of the Lagoacho dam via a tunnel with a length of 3,270 m . From there a 2,330 m long canal runs to a storage basin. A 2,120 m long penstock then leads from this reservoir to the Sabugueiro II power plant.
