The Valle Grande dam ( Spanish: Represa Valle Grande or Dique Valle Grande ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of Mendoza , Argentina . It dams the Río Atuel to a reservoir. The dam and the associated power station Nihuil IV (span. Central hidroeléctrica Nihuil IV ) are also referred to as the Nihuil IV hydroelectric power station complex (span. Complejo hidroeléctrico Nihuil IV ).
The dam is used to generate electricity. Construction began in 1958. It was completed in 1965. The dam is state-owned ( Provincia de Mendoza ). The concession for the operation was transferred to Hidroeléctrica Nihuiles SA on June 1, 1994.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete dam with a height of 115 m above the river bed . The top of the wall is at a height of 815.6 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 300 m, its width at the crown 7.4 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 700,000 m³. The dam wall has a flood relief , through which a maximum of 512 m³ / s can be discharged.
Reservoir
The normal destination is between 779 and 812 m. With a reservoir target of 812 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 4.86 km² and holds 150.8 (or 168) million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 813.5 m, the minimum 754.2 m.
power plant
The Nihuil IV power plant was built from November 1994 to October 1997. The power plant's machine house is located about 100 m downstream of the dam on the right bank of the river. The installed capacity is 22.4 (or 25 or 30) MW . The average annual generation is given as 87 (or 132 or 137) million kWh . Annual generation fluctuates: in 2000 it was 100.9 million kWh and in 2006 it was 202.5 million kWh.
The Kaplan turbine has a maximum output of 30 (or 30.45) MW and the generator 31 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbine is 375 min −1 . The fall height is between 38.5 and 71 m. The flow rate is 48 m³ / s (maximum 55, minimum 24 m³ / s).
