The El Nihuil dam ( Spanish Represa El Nihuil or Dique El Nihuil ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in the province of Mendoza , Argentina . It dams the Río Atuel to a reservoir. The dam and the associated power plant Nihuil I (span. Central hidroeléctrica Nihuil I or Central hidroeléctrica Ing.Juan Eugenio Maggi ) are also known as the Nihuil I hydroelectric power plant complex (span. Complejo hidroeléctrico Nihuil I ).
The dam is used for power generation and irrigation. Construction began in 1942. It was completed in 1947. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Provincia de Mendoza ). The concession for the operation was transferred to Hidroeléctrica Nihuiles SA on June 1, 1994.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 25 m above the river bed . The top of the wall is at a height of 1254 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 315 (or 465) m, its width at the crown 4 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 65,000 m³. The dam wall has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet . A maximum of 549 (or 600) m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.
Reservoir
The normal destination is between 1248 and 1251 m. With a storage target of 1251 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 75 (or 108.51) km² and holds 236 (or 259, 260 or 387) million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 1252.5 m, the minimum 1232.8 m.
power plant
The Nihuil I power plant was built from 1949 to 1956. The power plant's machine house is located about 6 km downstream of the dam on the left bank of the river. The installed capacity is 74.24 MW . The average annual generation is given as 296 (or 365) million kWh . The annual production fluctuates: in 2000 it was 320 million kWh and in 2006 it was 496 million kWh.
The 4 Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 18.56 MW and the associated generators each 23.2 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 600 min −1 . The fall height is between 147 and 189 m. The flow rate is 13 m³ / s (maximum 14, minimum 9 m³ / s) per turbine.
Others
The operator Hidroeléctrica Nihuiles SA is 52.04% owned by Pampa Energía .
