The Varosa dam ( Barragem do Varosa in Portuguese ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Viseu district . It dams the Varosa , a left (southern) tributary of the Douro , to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem do Varosa ). The municipality of Valdigem is located about a kilometer northeast of the dam . The A24 motorway passes the reservoir on the left.
The construction of the Varosa dam dates back to 1899. The power plant was commissioned in 1934 (or 1976). The dam is used to generate electricity. It is owned by HDN, Energia do Norte, SA .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete arch dam with a height of 76 (or 71) m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 265 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 213 m and its width is 3.44 m. The volume of the structure is 81,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief , which is located on the right side of the dam wall. A maximum of 1,200 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 1,200 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 264 m (max. 265 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.7 km² and holds 12.943 (or 14.5) million m³ of water - of which 12.937 million m³ can be used to generate electricity be used.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 24.7 (or 22 or 25) MW, the Varosa power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual production is 60 million kWh .
machinery
Three Francis turbines with a horizontal shaft and different capacities are installed. The following table gives an overview:
machine | Nominal speed (1 / min) | Turbine (MW) | Generator (MVA) | Transformer (MVA) | Max. Flow rate (m³ / s) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 750 | 11.473 | 14.5 | 16 | 6.6 |
2 | 1,000 | 7.722 | 8.9 | 16 | 5.52 |
3 | 750 | 5.516 | 6.4 | 3.7 |
The nominal voltage of the generators is 5 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 5 kV to 60 kV by means of power transformers.
The maximum height of fall is 199.9 m. The maximum flow rate is a total of 15.82 m³ / s for all three machines.
The power plant is owned by HDN but operated by EDP .
