Lazaro Maria Sanguinetti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lazaro Maria Sanguinetti (* 1660 in Genoa , † around 1740 probably in Koblenz ) was a fresco painter of the Baroque . There is evidence that he worked as a fresco painter in castles and churches from 1682 to 1738. He worked spatially in Bohemia , Franconia , Hesse , Thuringia , in the Rhineland and made a detour to Lorraine .

Life

Sanguinetti was mentioned in a letter on February 10, 1702 as Sanguinetti (Lazarus Maria) “ premier peintre de SAR le duc Léopold ” (German: “First Painter of His Royal Highness the Duke Léopold ”), who was active in Nancy at that time .

He was married to Magdalena (née Jakobs) and has verifiably three children: Roderico, Magdalena Sidona, baptized on August 3, 1699 in Koblenz, Anna Elisabetha, baptized on February 18, 1709 in Koblenz, granddaughter: Maria Anna, baptized on 27. February 1744. Sanguinetti was a migrant worker, but he lived with his family in Koblenz from at least 1699, probably until his death around 1740 . Numerous buildings in which he created the frescoes were built according to plans by the Dientzenhofer family of builders . This suggests a special closeness to this family.

After a fire in the old castle of Schlackenwerth, the princess had the new white castle built. One of the builders was Christoph Dientzenhofer . The rich wall and ceiling decorations in the hall come from Sanguinetti. It represents the typical Baroque personification of ancient gods. Planets orbit the sun in the form of the god Apollo . There are also other allegorical figures.

  • 1695 to 1702, Bamberg , New Residence : redesign by Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn by master builder Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer. The frescoes of “Venus and Mars” in the anteroom and “The Olympian Gods” in the audience room are probably by Lazaro Sanguinetti.
  • 1698 to 1699 Nancy , former residence of the Dukes of Lorraine : Lazarus Maria Sanguinetti decorated the palace there during a stay in Nancy.
  • 1707/1708, Holzkirchen near Würzburg , parish church St. Michael: The art-loving pastor Scheffer had the flat ceiling of the church painted by the ceiling painter Sanguinetti from Koblenz. The main painting shows the fall of the angels with St. Michael , the small round pictures in the four corners of the nave show Old and New Testament angel scenes. Front left “Archangel Raphael with Tobias on the rice”, right “Annunciation”, back left “Ishmael and Hagar in the desert” and right “Peter in prison”.
  • 1709, Sondershausen ( Thuringia ), residential palace: octagonal house in the pleasure garden of Prince Christian Wilhelm von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, the colorful ceiling paintings show the triumph of Venus by the painter Sanguinetti. The goddess, accompanied by Cupid, descends from heaven in a cloud on her chariot drawn by pigeons. Neptune emerges from the sea on his horse-drawn chariot to give Venus a shell from which the goddess pulls a pearl necklace.
  • 1709, Weilburg , residential palace : Count Johann Ernst von Nassau-Weilburg arranged for the palace to be expanded into a baroque residence with numerous outbuildings at the beginning of the 18th century. The beautifully stuccoed and gilded ceiling of the hall has a fresco by the painter Sanguinetti in the center mirror. According to a number embedded in the parquet floor, this hall was completed in 1709.
  • 1711, Koblenz , Philippsburg Palace: Elector Carl Joseph von Lothringen had Sanguinetti redecorate five rooms.
  • 1713 to 1714, Meiningen , Elisabethenburg Palace : Ceiling painting wing (south), ballroom fresco by Sanguinetti.

The master builder was Bernhard Schießer, previously a master builder at Schöntal Abbey . He was married to Georg Dientzenhofer's widow . From the contract with Daniel Schenk, the electoral Mainz court plasterer, from March 3, 1715, it emerges that the virtuoso painter Sanguinetti had to paint the entire choir of the new court church in frescoes. Sanguinetti created the ceiling paintings with the sky of saints in the main room and the sufferings of Christ in the choir. For his work he received 833 guilders and 30 kreuzers, plus breakfast and dinner. His mason (plasterer) was called Jakob and was possibly a relative of his wife.
  • 1721, Rastatt , Schlosskirche : designs for ceiling frescoes, Sanguinetti shared the fresco painting with other artists. Margravine Franziska Sibylla did not like his work, so he was paid off and dismissed.
  • 1729, Maria Trost im Brünnl near Gratzen (South Bohemia): The wonderful frescoes in the church vault and in the lantern are by the Italian Lazarus Maria Sanguinetti. The ceiling painting "al tempera" depicts the kingdom of heaven with a multitude of saints and angels in clouds. The work originally completed in 1729 was completely and hard painted over in 1888.
  • 1738: Löhnberg , Hessen, Ev. Parish church: The church itself is a late baroque building with a unique painting that was only conceivable in a Lutheran congregation. The ceiling painting, probably painted by Lazarus Maria Sanguinetti, depicts the Trinity, archangels, angels and putti.

Sanguinetti was one of the many baroque artists, largely unknown today, who provided the residences with splendid furnishings. The appreciation of his work at the time can be clearly seen in a comparison: the court marshal of the residence in Bartenstein had an annual salary of 300 guilders, a stately home near the castle cost 700 guilders.
