The Vilarinho das Furnas dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Vilarinho das Furnas ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Braga district . It dams the Homem River into a reservoir. The dam and the associated reservoir are on the edge of the Peneda-Gerês National Park . About 1 km southeast of the dam is the municipality of Campo do Gerês .
The project to build the dam began in 1966. The construction was completed in 1972. In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for flood protection. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete arch dam with a height of 94 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 570 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 385 (or 398.3) m. The volume of the structure is 294,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with 2 gates. A maximum of 180 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 280 m³ / s via the flood discharge.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 569.5 m (maximum 570 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 3.46 km² and holds 117.69 (or 118) million m³ of water - 116.08 (or 69.7) million m³ are used. With the usable 69.7 million m³ of water, 137.9 million kWh can be generated.
power plant
The Vilarinho das Furnas power plant is a pumped storage power plant which, with an installed capacity of 125 MW (pump capacity 78.6 MW), is one of the medium-sized hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual production is 225 (or 185, 189 or 194) million kWh .
The minimum height of fall is 377.5 m, the maximum 425.3 m. The maximum flow rate is a total of 39.9 m³ / s for the two machines.
The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .
machinery
There are 2 Francis turbines with vertical shaft and different power installed. The first machine went into operation in 1972, the second in 1987. The following table gives an overview:
machine | Nominal speed (1 / min) | Turbine (MW) | Generator (MVA) | Transformer (MVA) | Max. Flow rate (m³ / s) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 600 | 67.7 | 80 | 80 | 19.7 |
2 | 375 | 73.6 | 81 | 84 | 20.2 |
The nominal voltage of the generators is 10 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 10 kV is increased to 160 kV by means of power transformers.
pumped storage power plant
The second machine is a pump turbine with a maximum power consumption of 78.6 MW. The pump can transport a maximum of 19.2 m³ / s. The reservoir of the Caniçada dam serves as the lower basin . A 7.6 km long pipeline connects the machine house with the Vilarinho das Furnas dam.

Remarks
- ↑ EDP also specifies 125 MW as the installed power of the power plant, although the two turbines together have a maximum output of 141.3 MW and the two generators together a maximum of 161 MVA.
- ↑ Deviating from this, Global Energy Observatory states that in 1972 two machines with 74 MW each went into operation.
