Tamoil came into being in the 1970s when the Lebanese businessman Roger Tamraz, who was born in Egypt and lives in the United States, bought various oil refineries in the Middle East for around one billion US dollars . Tamraz, who had previously worked as an investment banker on Wall Street at Kidder, later added the refineries with the takeover of the Italian refinery and filling station network from Amoco and named the group Tamoil . In the 1980s, Tamoil and Gatoil, another Lebanese oil company, passed into Libyan ownership. Libya combined the two companies under the umbrella of the state-controlled company Oilinvest. In the group of around 40 individual companies in Europe, Tamoil is the largest; it spends about 350,000 barrels of crude oil per day from Libya for refining to Europe.

A sale of a 65% stake for US $ 3.5 billion to the US investment company Colony Capital , which was announced in 2007 , did not materialize.

Data

Tamoil operates 2811 gas stations in Europe , most of them in Italy (as of 2009) and one refinery in Germany (Holborn Europa Raffinerie GmbH, Hamburg-Harburg); other refineries in Europe have since been shut down ( Collombey in Switzerland, closed in 2015 and Cremona in Italy, closed in 2010). In 2007 the oil company with 1771 employees had a turnover of 10.7 billion euros, in 2010 sales amounted to 1.36 million tons of mineral oil products.

The German Tamoil operates in Germany 397 gas stations (as of 2012), mainly under the brand HEM.
