The Tanager Peak [ ˈtænədʒər ] is with a height of 260 m above sea level after Miller's Peak, the second highest point on the island of Nihoa in the northwestern Hawai'i Islands . It lies in the northeast of the basaltic , largely eroded island and slopes almost perpendicular to the Pacific . The mountain was named after the USS Tanager , the research ship of the Tanager expedition of the same name , during which the island was first scientifically explored in 1923.
