Tancredi Pasero (born January 11, 1893 in Turin , † February 17, 1983 in Milan ) was an Italian opera singer ( bass ). Together with Ezio Pinza and Nazzareno De Angelis, he is considered to be one of the three outstanding bassists of the 20th century.

Life

Pasero received his training from Arturo Pessina and made his debut in 1917 as Ramphis in Aida , in 1918 he sang Rodolfo in La sonnambula . In 1926 he made his debut as King Philip in Don Carlo under Arturo Toscanini at La Scala in Milan , for which he gave a total of 435 performances during his career. Further debuts followed in 1929 with the Metropolitan Opera , in 1931 with the London Covent Garden Opera and in 1935 with the Paris Opera . Other roles by Pasero included Don Basilio ( The Barber of Seville ), Lothario ( Mignon ), Méphistophélès ( Gounod ), Fiesco ( Simon Boccanegra ), Walter ( Luisa Miller ), Ferrando ( Il trovatore ), Alvise ( La Gioconda ), Escamillio ( Carmen ), Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ), Assur ( Semiramide ) or the title roles in Boris Godunov and Mefistofele ; as Wagner roles among others Marke ( Tristan und Isolde ) and Gurnemanz ( Parsifal ). In 1951, Pasero retired from the stage at the age of 58 and then worked as a singing teacher.

Jürgen Kesting considers Pasero to be a “central singer” : his voice “was rich and full, vibrantly intense and unusually extensive. Pasero could sing both Sarastro and Escamillio because his range ranged from a low E to an effortless F sharp. ” Jens Malte Fischer gives a differentiated judgment on Pasero:“ Compared to de Angelis, however, one must also state that Paseros sing when Once you get used to the richness of the vocal stream, in the long run it appears monotonous and monochrome, it lacks the art of characterization and the will to differentiate to give your role portraits the final sharpness of the contour, but vocal fullness and soothing lines rank it among the whole great bass player.
