Taniguchi Yoshirō ( Japanese 谷口 吉 郎 ; born June 24, 1904 in Ishikawa Prefecture ; died February 2, 1979 ) was a Japanese architect of the Shōwa period .

life and work

After graduating from the Department of Architecture at the University of Tokyo, Taniguchi Yoshirō took on a teaching position at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT), but at the same time worked as an architect. In pre-war Japan, his design for the hydraulics laboratory of TIT in 1932 was trend-setting, as was the 1937 design for the kindergarten ( 幼稚 舎 Yōchisha ) at Keiō University in 1936. From 1938 to 1939 he stayed in Berlin, where he stayed on the occasion of the new construction of the Japanese embassy dealt with the creation of the garden.

His experiences in Europe led to a reorientation: after the Pacific War he approached traditional Japanese architecture. His memorial hall for Shimazaki Tōson ( 藤 村 記念 館 Tōson Kinenkan ) from 1947 is an extremely simple structure in a rural setting, it is remarkable in its approximation to the Japanese style.

In 1951 Taniguchi designed the building for the art department of Keiō University on the Mita campus, the Shinmanraisha ( 新 萬 來 舎 ), in 1958 the Museum for Shimazaki Tōson ( 小 諸 市立 藤 村 記念 館 ) in Komori followed , and in 1959 he was involved in the design the facility for the unknown war dead near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, the Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery , in 1960 he designed the residence for the Crown Prince ( 東宮 御所 Tōgū Gosho ), in 1966 the Teikoku Gekijō , all three in Tokyo. He also created industrial structures such as the 2nd Chichibu cement plant in 1956 ( 秩 父 セ メ ン ト 第 2 工場 ). He also worked as an interior designer for hotels and theaters.

For his book Shugakuin rikyū Taniguchi received the Mainichi Culture Prize in 1957 . 1961 followed the award of the Japanese Academy of the Arts for the residence built by him for the crown prince and then in 1987 another award of the academy for the "Domon Ken Memorial Museum" ( 土 門 拳 記念 館 ) for the photographer Domon Ken in his hometown Sakata . In 1973 Taniguchi was awarded the Order of Culture .
