Tankular (spelling variant: Tancrowall ) is a town of historical importance in the West African state of Gambia .

According to a calculation for the year 2013, about 931 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 829.

geography

Tankular is located in the Lower River Region in the Kiang West District and is about 65 Bwiam away, is directly on the Gambia River and has a pier there. The place is west of the Kiang West National Park .

history

In the 15th century, the Portuguese , the first Europeans to be on the Gambia River in the history of the Gambia , maintained numerous bases. Among other things, they had founded a mission and a trading base (also a trading post ) here around 1455 .

Culture and sights

In Tankular, stones and bells from the old settlement have been preserved and are known as a place of worship .
