Kiang West is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the Lower River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 15,065 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 14,711.
The name is derived from Kiang , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around nine tenths, followed by the Fula and the Jola. The distribution in detail: 87.9% Mandinka , 8.7% Fula , 0.2% Wolof , 2.8% Jola , 0.1% Serahule , 0.1% Serer , 0.1% Aku , 0.1 % Manjago , 0% Bambara and 0.1% other ethnic groups.
