Kiang East is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the Lower River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 6316 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 6534.
The name is derived from Kiang , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around seven tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 70.8% Mandinka , 17.2% Fula , 10.7% Wolof , 0.3% Jola , 0.3% Serahule , 0.5% Serer , 0% Aku , 0% Manjago , 0 % Bambara and 0.2% other races.
