Johann Konrad Sigismund Topp (born December 18, 1692 in Ilten , † February 25, 1757 in Helmstedt ) was a German legal scholar and professor at the University of Helmstedt .

Life

Johann Konrad Sigismund Topp was born in Ilten near Sehnde in what is now Lower Saxony , the son of the preacher Gottschalk Topp . From 1709 to 1711 he attended the monastery school in Ilfeld . In 1711 Topp enrolled in the register of the University of Jena to study law .

In 1715 he settled as a lawyer in Celle and in 1719 became extraordinary secretary of the Higher Appeal Court . For the young lawyers subordinate to him for training there, Topp developed his own textbooks and tables to make it easier for them to study law. In 1743 he turned down a position at the court in Hanover and in 1748 accepted an appointment as professor at the University of Helmstedt.

In his work as a professor, Topp focused particularly on the role of university lecturer and the training of students. The colleagues in the faculty, especially the church historian and professor of law Johann Georg Pertsch (1694–1754), on the other hand, made massive complaints about the quality of his academic work. Topp was therefore exempted from the task of drawing up legal notices and expert opinions by the university and was commissioned in 1753 to supervise the orphanage and the convictorium .

On February 25, 1757, Topp died of a blow river . Johann Konrad Sigismund Topp was married twice and left behind a daughter from his first marriage, two daughters and four sons from his second marriage.

Topp, who was one of the followers of the natural law specialist Christian Wolff , wrote mainly legal textbooks for the university.
