Kiang Central is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the Lower River Region .

According to a calculation from 2013, about 8018 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 7886.

The name is derived from Kiang , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around seven tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 65% Mandinka , 32.5% Fula , 0.6% Wolof , 0.6% Jola , 0% Serahule , 0.6% Serer , 0.1% Aku , 0% Manjago , 0.2 % Bambara and 0.4% other races.
