Jarra East is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the Lower River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 13,010 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 2003 was 12,505.
The name is derived from Jarra , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around seven tenths, followed by the Fula and the Serahule. The distribution in detail: 66.5% Mandinka , 27.5% Fula , 1% Wolof , 0.4% Jola , 2.8% Serahule , 0.1% Serer , 0.1% Aku , 0.1% Manjago , 0.2% Bambara and 1.3% other races.
