Jarra West is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative division - in the West African state of Gambia . It is one of six districts in the Lower River Region .
According to a calculation from 2013 about 26,921 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 24,416.
The name is derived from Jarra , a former small empire.

According to a survey from 1993 ( census at that time ), the Mandinka represented the largest population group with a share of around seven tenths, followed by the Fula and the Wolof. The distribution in detail: 71.4% Mandinka , 19.1% Fula , 3.6% Wolof , 1.8% Jola , 1.6% Serahule , 0.5% Serer , 0% Aku , 0.6% Manjago , 0.2% Bambara and 1.1% other races.
