The Kiang West National Park is the largest nature reserve in the West African state of Gambia with approximately 19,000 hectares .
topography
The national park is about 145 kilometers from the capital Banjul and about five kilometers from Tendaba with the Tendaba Camp . Located on the south bank of the Gambia River , the area is in the Lower River Region in the Kiang West District and is accessible via the South Bank Road . Three entrances lead into the park, which can be explored on foot or by car. The park's office is located at Dumbutu , at one of the entrances closest to South Bank Road.
In the northwest, on the banks of the Gambia River, lies the Tubabkollon Point landmark .
history
Germany , among others, was involved in setting up the park in 1987 . First, an area of around 11,500 hectares was designated for the largest national park in Gambia. In July 2014, the Gambia Department of Parks and Wildlife Management announced that the area had been expanded by a further 8,000 hectares to 19,000 hectares.
fauna and Flora
Besides bushbuck and duiker here are caracal and the serval to find -cat. Crocodiles , mongooses and otters can be found in the mangroves . With a lot of luck you can even see African manatees . Baboons and colobus monkeys can be found throughout the area.
Large parts of the area consist of gallery forests and wet savannahs . Mangrove forests can be found on the river side .
tourism
Tourism does not play a major role; but one hopes that it will develop stronger.
