Tanque Argentino Mediano ( TAM , German Argentine medium-weight tank ) is based on the German Marder 1 armored personnel carrier . It is the main battle tank of Argentina .
It was developed by Argentina in the mid-1970s together with the marten manufacturer Rheinmetall .
history
The tank is equipped with a L7 - gun of caliber mm loaded 105 as the main weapon. As a secondary weapon, the tank carries an axially parallel 7.62 mm machine gun . Another 7.62mm machine gun is mounted on the turret hatch.
The TAM was developed in parallel with the Vehiculo de Combate Transporte de Personal , a personnel carrier . Both tanks use the same chassis , and the engine and chassis are identical.
The main differences between the TAM and the Marder are changes to the drive system and reinforcement of the armor . The TAM is the standard battle tank of the Fuerzas armadas de Argentina and a whole family of other vehicles is based on this design. These include the VCPM mortar carrier, the VCRC armored recovery vehicle (only a prototype was developed, the program was subsequently discontinued), the mobile VCTC command post, the VCLC multiple rocket launcher (prototype only, discontinued afterwards) and a self-propelled howitzer (prototype only, then set). The self-propelled howitzer carries an Argentinian license production of the Italian 155 mm howitzer “ Palmaria ”.
The first production series of the TAM includes very few vehicles and is equipped with a license production of the L7A1 cannon. The second production series carries the L7A2 cannon and the last series carries a license production of the French CN-105-57 cannon. The license production is carried out by the company TAMSE in Río Tercero , Province of Cordoba .
