Río Tercero is a city in central Argentina , located in the center of the province of Cordoba . It has 44,715 inhabitants and is an important industrial center.
location
Río Tercero is located on the Río Ctalamochita , whose Spanish name Río Tercero gave the city its name. Ten kilometers west of the city is the reservoir of the same name. The surrounding area is flat, it belongs to the humid pampas and is used intensively for agriculture.
history
The city was officially founded in 1913 , even if a village known as Pueblo de la Media Luna already existed here. In the beginning it was called Modesto Acuña after its founder . In the course of time, important industries settled: for example the military factory Río Tercero , which mainly produced weapons, and the petrochemical Petroquímica Río Tercero . On November 3, 1995, there were strong explosions in the military factory, which resulted in the destruction of a large part of the factory and heavily polluted the surrounding environment. With the current state of the investigation, it is almost certain that the explosions were an arson attack , presumably to destroy documents on illegal arms exports by the Carlos Menem's government (1989–99).
Attractions
Architecturally interesting buildings are the Villa Elisa , a villa from the founding period, and the central building of the Banco Provincia de Córdoba .
economy
Despite the misfortune in the military factory, the city still lives from industry. In addition, agriculture is practiced in the surrounding area, in particular soybeans , sunflowers , peanuts and beans are grown .
